Public health monitoring is a crucial part of all governmental health programs that aim to capture both the physical and mental health of communities, detect changes and evaluate the impact of programs and policies intended to improve their health status. However, the quick and reliable assessment of the overall health of a population remains challenging.
We propose the rapid and inexpensive evaluation of public health, at the a community scale, for the whole of the Netherlands. Our approach relies on the principle that levels of specific biomarkers found in wastewater reflect what people in a community have consumed or been exposed to. By detecting and quantifying these biomarkers in the influent of the wastewater treatment plants WWTP spread across the Netherlands, we can monitor the current health status of the country at different levels of granularity e.
By selecting different biomarkers of interest we can assess i lifestyle, for instance the consumption of alcohol, tobacco or illicit drugs; ii dietary habits, such as meat and soya consumptionby measuring food markers; iii disease and exposure, by looking at levels of different pharmaceuticals, endogenous and exposure biomarkers, as well as microbiological indicators e.

When paying homage to mentoring in , Sir Richard Branson said that a great guide was the missing link between a promising businessperson and a successful one. The need for an inspirational figure remains as strong today as it was when Branson launched Virgin Atlantic in Having an advisor is as important now as it ever was. Generation Y executives are tackling the traditional barriers to success that existed when Branson and Laker worked together, such as a linear business hierarchy.
Last year Adam Kingl, Director of Learning Solutions, London Business School, surveyed Gen Y executives from 33 countries and revealed that 90 per cent of the group plan to spend less than five years with an employer. Furthermore, Kingl says that based on current trends, Generation X will likely have seven to eight jobs in their lifetime, whereas Gen Y will have 15 to It’s small wonder then that people seeking a broader business perspective are now looking beyond their workplace for a mentor.

An Industrial PhD is a three-year PhD project, where the PhD student is employed by a private enterprise and has an enrolment at the university at the same time. To apply for funding for an industrial PhD, you yourself must first find a Danish company and a supervisor at the company. Together with your supervisors, you define an industrial project, and together with the company, you apply for funding at Innovation Fund Denmark. Once Innovation Fund Denmark approves your application for funding, only then can you apply for admission to the PhD School of Science.
The subsidy can max. Industrial PhD students are subject to the same requirements as all other university PhD students, but are not obliged to teach courses – it is not included in the contract. Industrial PhD students must also take a specific PhD business course. Until now it has been mandatory for all Industrial PhD students to participate in a business course. However, no more courses are held at the moment, and students who are yet to participate are thus exempted from participating.
The Industrial PhD newsletter is published a number of times every year.
